5 Tips For Healthy, Happy Skin

When I look in the mirror, I am (usually) happy with what I see. This was not always the case. I went through a phase of acne, and as soon as I started to get it under control, I started noticing the lines creeping in. There was always something I was looking to ‘cover up’ with makeup, and unfortunately I later learned this was part of the problem. I don’t know about you, but I was always looking for the quick fix, and slapping a heavy coat of foundation seemed like the quickest fix for me. It took a total lifestyle makeover for me to realize what I will share with you today…that healthy, beautiful glowing skin starts from the inside. Often, I am asked about my own skincare routine, and many are surprised to find that my first answer is always lifestyle and diet based. If my skin look great, it is probably because I went for a hike this morning, and put extra spinach and avocado in my smoothie.  There is no magic potion to transform your skin, but these 5 tips could make all the difference!

1. Great skin starts from the inside…but YOU need to get outside! 

Exercise is the first step to any life change…always. Working up a good sweat is like treating yourself to a mini-facial. When your pores dilate, sweat expels trapped dirt and oil. We live in one of the best places on earth to grab a little ‘fresh air workout’. Exercise also reduce inflammation, helps regulate skin hormones and prevents free-radical damage (the same thing your expensive skin cream says it does). When you exercise, tiny arteries in your skin open up, allowing more blood to reach the skin’s surface and deliver nutrients that repair damage from the sun and environmental pollutants. These nutrients also help the skin’s collagen production. (can anyone say ‘fewer wrinkles?) Even just taking a walk outside will get your blood pumping a bit, and the release of endorphins make you feel great…so your skin will glow!sweating


2. Your Mom was right…diet does matter.

I’m sure we all had someone in our life say “Acne eh? You must eat too many chocolate bars” (hopefully it wasn’t just me) Now, even though that statement is not entirely accurate, what you put in your body always show up on your face. A diet containing plenty of good fats, leafy greens, and some herbal teas thrown in for good measure will ensure your skin retains its youthful glow. The biggest enemy to your skin: sugar. Not only is refined sugar bad for your body, it is also a sneaky wrinkle causer! Sugar causes early breakdown of collagen which keeps our skin looking smooth and youthful.


3. When it comes to skincare, be informed and make choices right for YOU!

At the moment there is a LOT of fear mongering and greenwashing in the beauty industry.  (Two things I absolutely abhor)  You need to make choices make you feel comfortable, and fit with your lifestyle and budget. Making your own products is a great way to accomplish this, as you know exactly what goes in the product, and it can be a much more affordable skincare ritual. If you are short on time, choose handmade products whenever possible, and keep in mind the less ingredients-all the better. Some of my favorite skincare products are very simple, with two or three ingredients.  When in doubt – check it out! There are tonnes of resources out there now to help you. The Think Dirty app, and the EWG Skin Deep database are great sources of information on all things cosmetic.

4. Don’t conceal…reveal!

When it comes to cosmetics, we often are not thinking about caring for the skin, but covering it up. The fact is, the more things you pile on your skin, the harder time it has breathing. If you use a foundation, be sure it contains ingredients that are nourishing to the skin, and avoid silicones and heavy waxes which clog up the skin.  I always say: don’t worry too much about covering up what you consider imperfections. We are perceived much differently than what we see in the mirror, and 9 times out of ten, the only one noticing your blemish is you. Apply foundation before you conceal, and only use product in the areas where you really need them. Work within your own comfort level and reveal a more radiant you!


5. Take it easy on YOU.

Do what you can, when you can. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Every day is a new day to make good choices, and if we can’t always make the best choice, it is not the end of the world. Stress is a major contributor to many health ailments, and causes fatigue, irritability and low sex drive. How does that affect you skin you ask? Feeling good about yourself is the best beauty secret. When we feel rested, happy confident it shines through, eyes and makes you radiant!

Making lifestyle changes is always a challenge, but with small steps every day, you can be on your way to happy and healthy skin.
