Soroptimist – Best For Women

By  |  0 Comments

Soroptimist International is a global volunteer movement working together to transform the lives of girls, women and their children. Our network of over 80,000 club members in 130 countries and territories works at a local, national and international level to educate, empower and enable opportunities for women and girls.

One of the local clubs within the organization, Soroptimist International of Victoria Westshore (SIVW), is a network of dynamic professional women who get things done!

On a local level, SIVW currently operates 3 major initiatives:

1) Anney’s Closet – is a free store for at-risk women to shop for household items when they are starting fresh and need to outfit their new home, thanks to the donations from our community.  SIVW works closely with 35+ Victoria-based social service agencies who refer women to the Closet.  We assist on average three women per week and have served over 150 women in two short years since we started this project. 2) Financial awards for education and training are awarded to women. Our 5 year old club has awarded $6,100 to 17 women and girls.  To learn more about the awards:  Click Here…

3) Imagining Possibilities is an annual full day conference providing young women in the Greater Victoria area with career support and mentorship, through workshops, keynote speakers, career tradeshow and interaction with women in many business and trade sectors. On an international level, SIVW supports:   Micro-lending work through KIVA has supported 140+women entrepreneurs in their business endeavours.

We have taken a lead role in funding a project through a Soroptimist club in Uganda. The project when completed will be a manufacturing facility to make sanitary napkins from banana fibre, employing local women and thereby creating a social enterprise which helps women and girls.  Other international projects have included: funding solar cookers for countries destroyed by war,  allowing villagers the ability to cook food without having to search for wood to build fires; providing training and birthing kits for birth attendants in Papua New Guinea; and rebuilding devastated areas of Nepal after the recent earthquake.
