She Took On Challenging Landscapes

There are many treasures to be found on Vancouver Island, however, during my travels to Qualicum Beach, I found a gem.

The beautiful paintings of Pauline Pike can be found at the Old School House, Qualicum Art Supply  and The Spirit Gallery in Ucluelet, but that’s just on the Island! Pike says, she has sold her landscapes all over the world. “Inspiration isn’t hard to find, I have painted on the beaches of Mexico, England, Scotland and many other countries.”

Although the majority of her paintings are in watercolour, she’s also created an abundance of work in oil and acrylic. Pike doesn’t keep her talent to herself; what started as a hobby for Pike, turned in to a 30 year teaching career that began at Malaspina College Parksville/Qualicum campus, teaching 6 adult art classes a week.

Pike was also involved from the very start of The Old School House Arts Centrehelping with the original renovation and serving as a board member. The centre now serves as a studio and a hub for many local artists to feature their work.

Pike has lead quite the adventurous life, from travelling and selling her art world wide to teaching on three fund raising art cruises and also in TOSH’s classroom.

Working outdoors as well as in her home studio, The Sketchbook, Pauline finds that a west coast atmosphere offers constant challenges via mountains, sea, farmland and forest. She enjoys the misty qualities that watercolours produce so readily.

Originally from England, Pauline was raised in Edmonton, then moved to the Cariboo region of BC where she got her start in painting. After several workshops and years of painting she began to teach in colleges and hold workshops in watercolour painting, oils, acrylics and sketching for Eco Ventures (Elder Hostel) and on cruise ships.

She retired in 2011 after many years of instructing at the Old School House in Qualicum Beach and privately in her home studio.

Pauline’s work has been collected throughout BC and Alberta, the US, Japan, Britain, Germany and Australia.
